Part 2: No One’s Smarter Than The 2nd Grader or Days 2-7
You wake up and make the coffee. Then, you start planning.
We had a basic idea of how we wanted to arrange the furniture in the house. Sadly, it wasn’t until a week later that we had the house arranged to our liking.
Here are a few ideas about unpacking. First the truck, then the boxes.
Eat breakfast. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve started a project only to have to stop because I NEED some food. Relax, have some coffee or tea, eat something. Have some snacks on hand for later in the day. And most importantly, make a plan about lunch. Decide what time you want to break for lunch, or how far into the unpacking you want to get. I think when we did it, we got the entire truck emptied, and swept out, then went to lunch.
Know the rules of your truck rental. When I checked on making a reservation for the truck online, we would be charged an extra day if it wasn’t returned by 8 AM. This is because if it’s returned and cleared early enough, they can rent it out to someone else on that same day. We rented the truck for two days, loaded it up and emptied it on the first day (within 24 hours of the original rental agreement). Since we returned it earlier than the original rental agreement, we got a refund of an extra day. Sweeping it out before returning it also saved us approximately $25. Make sure you know all the little quirks of the fees and such, so you’re not surprised by anything when it comes time to settle the bill.
Make a plan. As we were beginning to unpack everything from the truck, we made a decision that we’d let the kids help with unloading the truck and the cars. This kept them occupied and we didn’t hear anything about being bored. Which brings me to my next bit of advice:
Invest in earplugs. This will help out when you begin to hear things such as, “Gee, I really wish we could take a break and go to Chuck E Cheese.” or “I really wish I could watch TV.” Or even better, “Mommy, can I still go back to Aunt Cathy’s house, like Caleb?” Sorry Charlie, no can do.
Put the beds together. That was the first thing that we did once we got back from lunch. We set it all up so that we could have a place to sleep that night. With the bag of linens you should pack, you should be all set. Our boys, with their selective hearing that they’re already getting, decided to pack all their toys in boxes instead of just putting the lid on the toy box like I told them to. Ended up being OK, because I put the bedding and towels in it. Easy access for bed and showering.
Don’t forget to clean up the old place. Once you get the old place emptied, make a list of what exactly need to be done before your inspection. Figure out what you have on hand that you can use, and then go shopping for whatever else you need. At this point, the only thing we had left behind were buckets, the mop and broom, and cleaning supplies. After two years, there were surprisingly few things that we needed to fix outside of cleaning the walls and floors. There were a few holes that needed patching, and the oven needed to be cleaned. Hubby took two extra days off, so we did one major thing each of those days. Thursday, he came for the beginning part of the day, and then left in time to get home and leave for work. While we were cleaning the garage, we found cans of paint, so we painted over the holes we patched up.
When we lived on the base while my husband was in the Army, we had to clear housing. Basically, it’s an inspection of the property, just like if you were renting a house “in the real world’. Except that the Army has these crazy ideas and wants everything to be perfect (even though they were just going to go in and completely remodel the house after we left). So we had to clean the walls. At the time, we had 3 children under the age of 8, so you know there were plenty of hand prints and things of that nature on the wall. So we scrubbed them down. With washcloths. That we couldn’t really afford to throw away, but did nonetheless.
We got smarter this time though. We took a few dollars, and went to Dollar Tree. There we bought several sponge mops. I think in the end we got 5, and left with one mop still in tact (it ended up coming handy the second week in the new house). We filled two buckets with Pine-Sol(and water, don’t forget the water!) and mopped the walls. It got the job done, and made it go faster. We also ended up using the mops to clean the ceiling fans and the shades.
Inspection Day. We arrived early on the day of the inspection, because we left the... [Read More]
